A Model of Vertical Oligopolistic Competition
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper develops a model of successive oligopolies with endogenous market entry, allowing for varying degrees of product differentiation and entry costs in both markets. Our analysis shows that the downstream conditions dominate the overall profitability of the two-tier structure while the upstream conditions mainly affect the distribution of profits. We compare the welfare effects of upstream versus downstream deregulation policies and show that the impact of deregulation may be overvalued when ignoring feedback effects from the other market. Furthermore, we analyze how different forms of vertical restraints influence the endogenous market structure and show when they are welfare enhancing. JEL classification: L13, D43, L40, L50

متن کاملAn Evolutionary Game-Theoretic Model of Revenue Management in Oligopolistic Competition
In this paper we articulate a dynamic model of revenue management where a set of service providers are involved in oligopolistic competition that is equilibrium tending. The service providers are price setters whose price setting strategies induce impacts on demand. The price setting mechanisms of these providers resemble the replicator dynamics that are common to evolutionary games. We show th...
متن کاملOligopolistic competition as a common agency game
In applying the common agency framework to the context of an oligopolistic industry, we want to go beyond the classical dichotomy between Cournot and Bertrand competition. We deÞne two games, the oligopolistic game and the corresponding concept of oligopolistic equilibrium, and an associated auxiliary game that can be interpreted as a common agency game and that has the same set of equilibria. ...
متن کاملEmpirical Studies of Bargaining and Contracting in Vertical Markets and Bilateral Oligopoly
Industries are rarely perfectly competitive. They also rarely comprise only firms who transact solely with consumers. Rather, in many industries—including health care, technology, media, and financial markets—firms are oligopolistic and negotiate terms of trade with one another across different market segments. Understanding how firms compete and interact in these vertical markets is critical n...
متن کاملOn strategic vertical foreign investment
We investigate the strategic incentives for vertical foreign direct investment by oligopolistic firms under exchange rate uncertainty. Domestic final good firms meet their input requirements either by investing abroad and producing directly through a subsidiary (intra-firm trade) or by buying from an oligopolistic market abroad (inter-firm trade). Firms undertaking vertical investment can bid u...
